Advisory: Password Updates via EPP, IDN Code Point Updates, UTC Display, and Response Code Updates

July 16, 2007

To All Registrars,

The following is an update to our 90 Day notification regarding updates to the .com/.net Shared Registration System to be deployed into the OT&E Environment on July 25, and in Production on August 25. All Registrars are required to connect to the Com/Net OT&E Environment following the July 25th OT&E maintenance to ensure that normal business operations are not impacted with these software updates that go into the Com/Net Production Environment on August 25th.

Password Updates via EPP Gateway Channel
VeriSign Registry will introduce the capability to update the EPP Gateway password via the EPP Gateway Channel. This change is being made in conjunction with Registrar feedback and to assist Registrars to comply with the VeriSign Security Policy.

The current EPP LOGIN command will use the option of new password <newPW> through which the EPP Gateway password can be updated.

UTC Display in Registrar Web Based Tool
The Registrar Web Based Tool (NameStore Manager) will begin displaying time in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) format, and no longer display time in US EDT for the .com and .net top-level domain names. Time is already displayed in UTC for the EPP Gateway Channel.

The following timestamps in the .com/.net TLD’s will be displayed in UTC format. In addition, the field labels listed below will be modified to add “(UTC)”. For example, Created Date will be displayed as “Created Date (UTC)”.

Response Code Updates

The following changes will be made to these existing response codes.

  1. A domain name update that references a nameserver that does not exist will receive a response code of ‘2303 object does not exist' with a reason ‘host X not found’.

The old response code was ' 2306 parameter value policy error '.

The following are the two scenarios when this response code will be returned with different reasons.

    • A domain name is updated to add new nameservers that do not exist, the response code is 2303 with a reason ‘host X not found’
    • A domain name update is submitted to delete a nameserver that does not exist, the response code is 2303 with a reason ‘X host link not found’
  1. In cases where there is a successful operation, but the changes that result from the operation do not happen immediately, we will now return response code 1001:

'1001 Command completed successfully; action pending'

This response code will be returned when responding to a command that requires offline activity before the requested action can be completed.  The delete-domain outside of grace period operation and the transfer-request operation both will now return this code, as the actual delete and transfer actions do not happen immediately. The current response code is ‘1000 command success '.

  1. An attempt to add an IP address to an out-of-zone host will now receive a ‘2306 Parameter value policy error’ instead of the ‘2001 command syntax error’ currently received.

  2. The following response code changes relate to authinfo operations. The authinfo response code changes are as follows. The response code for these commands was ' 2201 authorization error '.
    • When a transfer request is submitted with an invalid authinfo, the response code ' 2202 Invalid authorization information’ will be returned
    • When a transfer request is submitted without an authinfo, the response code ‘2003 Required parameter missing’ will be returned
    • When a Domain INFO command is submitted with an invalid authinfo, the response code ‘2202 Invalid authorization information’ will be returned
